What Is Lyocell Fabric?

Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber commonly produced from wood-based cellulose. It is widely used in apparel because of its soft hand feel, smooth surface, fluid drape and moisture-management characteristics.

For custom apparel development, Lyocell can be used alone or blended with fibers such as cotton, organic cotton, polyester, wool or elastane depending on the required hand feel, structure, stretch and garment application.

For B2B brands, selecting a Lyocell fabric should therefore involve more than choosing the fiber name. Fabric composition, GSM, knitting or weaving structure, finishing and garment construction all affect the performance of the finished product.

Why Use Lyocell for Custom Apparel?

Lyocell is suitable for brands developing garments where softness, drape and wearer comfort are important.

Soft Hand Feel & Drape

Lyocell fabrics can provide a smooth, soft surface and fluid drape, making them suitable for premium basics, dresses, tops and lightweight apparel.

The final hand feel depends on the fiber blend, yarn specification, fabric structure, GSM and finishing process.

Durable Lyocell Fabric Development

Durability should be evaluated at fabric and garment level rather than based on fiber type alone.

For custom Lyocell apparel, we can evaluate fabric composition, weight, construction and finishing according to the intended product and performance requirements.

This allows brands to develop Lyocell garments that balance softness with the required structure and durability.

Lyocell Fabric Options for Custom Development

Different products require different Lyocell fabric specifications.

Typical development considerations include:

  • Fiber composition and blend ratio
  • Fabric GSM and thickness
  • Knitted or woven construction
  • Stretch and recovery requirements
  • Surface texture and hand feel
  • Color and dyeing requirements
  • Printing or embroidery compatibility
  • Garment washing and finishing

Where suitable fabrics are already available, existing Lyocell or Lyocell-blend fabrics can help reduce development time and fabric minimums.

For more specific projects, custom fabric specifications can be evaluated according to the required composition, weight, color and garment design.

Custom Lyocell T-Shirts

Lyocell and Lyocell-blend jersey fabrics can be developed for premium T-shirts, tops and lightweight casualwear.

Depending on the required product positioning, brands can specify fabric weight, fit, color, neckline construction, labels and decoration methods.

Lyocell can also be blended with cotton or other fibers when a brand requires a different balance of softness, structure, durability or cost.

Lyocell Dresses & Fashion Apparel

The fluid drape of many Lyocell fabrics makes the fiber suitable for dresses, skirts, relaxed tops and other fashion garments.

For these products, fabric weight and construction are especially important because they influence opacity, movement, silhouette and overall garment appearance.

Sampling allows these characteristics to be evaluated before bulk production.

Lyocell Blends for Different Apparel Applications

A custom Lyocell apparel project does not always require 100% Lyocell.

Depending on the product, blended fabrics may provide a more appropriate combination of properties.

For example, Lyocell-cotton blends can be considered for soft everyday garments, while Lyocell-elastane constructions can provide additional stretch for fitted styles.

The appropriate composition should be selected according to the intended garment rather than using one fabric specification across an entire collection.

Custom Lyocell Apparel OEM/ODM Development

Our apparel development process supports B2B brands from fabric selection through sampling and bulk production.

For OEM projects, brands can provide tech packs, measurements, artwork, fabric requirements and construction details for development.

For ODM projects, we can assist with fabric options, garment specifications and sample development based on the brand's product concept and target market.

Our in-house technical and sample team supports prototype development, while bulk production is coordinated according to the approved specifications and project requirements.

MOQ, Sampling & Bulk Production

For custom OEM/ODM apparel, the general MOQ starts from 100 pieces per style, subject to fabric availability, color requirements and garment complexity.

Typical development timing:

  • Sampling: approximately 7–15 days
  • Bulk production: approximately 20–35 days after sample and production details are approved

Fabric minimums may differ from garment MOQs, particularly when a project requires custom colors, special compositions or newly developed fabrics.
