CORDURA® fabric is widely associated with durability-focused textiles for outdoor gear and performance apparel. For clothing designers and sourcing managers, the key question is not simply whether to use CORDURA® fabric, but which construction, composition and weight best suit the intended garment.
From lightweight windbreakers to stretch outdoor trousers and wool-blend tops, CORDURA® branded materials offer different development possibilities.
What Are the Benefits of CORDURA® Fabric for Outdoor Clothing?
CORDURA® is a family of branded fabric technologies developed for durability and specific end-use requirements.
Depending on the selected technology and construction, potential advantages include:
-
Abrasion resistance: Useful for garments exposed to repeated contact with backpacks, equipment and rough surfaces.
-
Tear resistance: An important consideration for outdoor clothing subjected to mechanical stress.
-
Stretch and mobility: Selected nylon-spandex woven constructions can support movement-focused jacket and trouser designs.
-
Versatile fabric weights: Different constructions allow designers to balance garment weight, structure and comfort.
-
Material versatility: Selected woven and knitted constructions support different outdoor and lifestyle applications.
Not every CORDURA® fabric delivers identical performance. Waterproofing, wind resistance, breathability and abrasion test results must be verified for the specific material.
CORDURA® Stretch Woven vs. Wool-Blend Knitted Fabrics
Fabric construction directly affects garment design, fit and intended use.
| Fabric Type | Development Considerations | Potential Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight stretch woven | Lower fabric weight and flexible construction | Windbreakers, lightweight outdoor jackets |
| Midweight stretch woven | More substantial fabric construction and fit requirements | Hiking pants, outdoor trousers |
| Heavier stretch woven | Structured garment development | Outdoor jackets, technical outerwear |
| Wool-blend knitted | Knit flexibility, wool content and comfort requirements | Performance tops, travel apparel |
For example, April Su currently showcases selected CORDURA® fabric applications:
-
CORDURA® Wool Blend Women's T-Shirt — 180 GSM knitted fabric.
-
CORDURA® Unisex Hooded Windbreaker — 122 GSM stretch woven fabric.
-
CORDURA® Men's Outdoor Pants — 176 GSM stretch woven fabric.
-
CORDURA® Men's Hooded Outdoor Jacket — 240 GSM stretch woven fabric.
These examples represent only a small selection of available development directions, not the complete range of CORDURA® fabric technologies.
Can CORDURA® Fabric Composition and Weight Be Customized?
Yes, selected CORDURA® fabric specifications may be developed according to a brand's requirements, subject to the capabilities of authorized material suppliers and applicable brand standards.
Depending on the fabric program, development may involve:
-
Fiber composition and blend selection
-
Fabric weight (GSM)
-
Knitted or woven construction
-
Stretch requirements
-
Custom colors and finishing
-
Performance testing and documentation
However, not every requested composition or construction qualifies as an approved CORDURA® branded fabric. Brand eligibility and material performance must be confirmed before production.
For April Su's selected custom fabric programs, the starting fabric MOQ is generally 1,000 meters, subject to material specifications and supplier confirmation. Finished-garment quantities are calculated separately.
What Should Outdoor Apparel Brands Check Before Sourcing?
Before approving a fabric, designers and purchasing teams should confirm:
-
End use: Hiking, travel, outdoor lifestyle or technical outerwear.
-
Fabric specifications: Composition, GSM, width, construction and stretch.
-
Performance evidence: Relevant abrasion, tear, colorfastness and weather-protection test reports.
-
Brand authenticity: Supplier authorization, eligible CORDURA® labels and material traceability.
-
Production feasibility: Sampling, custom fabric MOQ, garment consumption and lead times.
A fabric should be selected against the intended garment requirements rather than relying on a branded name alone.
