Functional Fabrics for Custom Apparel: A Guide for Brands

Sustainable Clothing Manufacturer April Su

Choosing functional fabrics for custom apparel involves more than selecting a familiar material name. Designers and sourcing teams need to connect the intended function with garment construction, custom fabric requirements, minimum quantities and development time.

CORDURA®, COOLMAX® and Triporous™ offer different material directions for apparel development. This guide explains what brands should consider when selecting these materials and planning OEM/ODM production.

April Su provides material sourcing, sampling and coordinated garment production based on customer designs. The functional fabrics featured here require custom production. Our displayed garments are reference styles, with fit, construction and branding developed according to approved project requirements.

Choose Materials Around the Garment’s Intended Use

Define the wearer’s needs before selecting a fabric.

Development Priority Material Direction What to Review
Durability-focused garments Suitable CORDURA® constructions Abrasion resistance, tear strength, weight and flexibility
Moisture-management apparel Suitable COOLMAX® fabrics and blends Moisture transport, drying performance, comfort and stretch
Odor-management clothing Triporous™-incorporated fabrics Fiber composition, relevant odor tests and wash durability

These technologies serve different purposes. The complete fabric specification—including blend, construction and finishing—helps determine suitability for the garment.

Set performance requirements for the selected material rather than relying on its trademark alone. Durability does not automatically establish waterproof protection, and moisture management does not automatically establish antibacterial performance.

CORDURA® for Durability-Focused Apparel

CORDURA® includes fabric technologies developed for durability-focused applications. Different constructions offer different weights, textures and levels of flexibility.

Our CORDURA® unisex hooded windbreaker demonstrates a lightweight stretch-woven option using 94% nylon and 6% spandex at 122 GSM.

For this selected custom-produced fabric, the fabric MOQ is 1,000 meters. Estimated garment output is approximately 500 pieces, depending on the design, size breakdown and cutting consumption. This is a project estimate rather than a fixed garment quantity for every style.

Customers can develop their own jacket silhouette, hood, pockets, closures and measurements. Requirements for abrasion resistance, wind resistance or water repellency should be reviewed against the selected material’s specifications and supporting tests.

COOLMAX® for Moisture-Management Garments

COOLMAX® technology is designed to help move moisture away from the skin and support drying comfort. The other fibers in the blend, fabric weight and construction also influence the finished garment.

Our COOLMAX® blend unisex long sleeve performance T-shirt presents a 165 GSM knit containing 56% bamboo-derived fiber, 41% polyester including COOLMAX® fiber, and 3% spandex.

This fabric requires custom production. Fabric MOQ and the corresponding garment order quantity are confirmed after reviewing the selected specifications, colors and design.

For brands developing training tops or everyday performance apparel, our team can assess fabric construction, fit, branding and production feasibility. Share your target quantities and color references so these requirements can be reviewed before sampling and bulk production.

Triporous™ for Odor-Management Development

Triporous™ is a rice-husk-derived porous carbon material developed by Sony. Its adsorption properties have applications in functional textiles, including odor management.

Our Triporous™ men’s long sleeve Polo shirt presents a 290 GSM knitted fabric incorporating the technology through a viscose fiber component.

The grey Polo is a reference sample. Customers can submit their own designs for feasibility review, with bulk colors developed according to approved requirements.

This selected fabric requires custom production from 1,000 meters. The corresponding garment quantity depends on fabric width, consumption, size breakdown and the chosen style.

Specific odor-control results and wash durability should be supported by tests applicable to the selected fabric. General technology information does not establish identical performance across all finished garments.

Review Prototypes and Colors Before Bulk Production

An initial prototype can help resolve design decisions before the custom production fabric is ready.

At April Su, we may use a similar available fabric to make the first sample. This allows customers to review the silhouette, measurements, construction and preliminary fabric feel.

The substitute material is used for early development only. Its hand feel and drape may differ from the final fabric, and it cannot confirm the production material’s shrinkage or functional performance. These details should be reviewed using the approved production fabric before bulk garment approval.

For custom dyeing, lab dips are submitted for customer selection before bulk fabric production and dyeing proceed. Color approval and garment approval are separate stages: an approved shade does not replace a final-material sample.

Resolving fit, construction and color decisions early helps establish a clearer production brief.

Plan for Custom Fabric and Garment Lead Times

The functional fabrics featured in this guide are custom-produced rather than held in stock. Brands should allow time for fabric production and dyeing, followed by garment manufacturing.

Our indicative production schedule is:

Stage Planning Reference
Fabric production and dyeing Approximately 40–50 days
Garment production Approximately 30 days
Combined production stages Approximately 70–80 days when scheduled consecutively

This is a production planning reference, not the complete period from inquiry to delivery. Initial development, lab-dip approvals, sample revisions, final-material approval and shipping require additional time.

Confirm testing, finishing and approval requirements when establishing the schedule. Bulk garment production is arranged after the production fabric is ready and the required sample approvals are complete.

Fabric MOQ should also be distinguished from garment MOQ. A minimum expressed in meters must be converted into garment quantities using the approved design, fabric width and cutting consumption. Confirm any color-specific minimums during the project review.

Verify Materials and Start Your OEM/ODM Project

April Su works with suppliers holding relevant authorization for the selected branded materials. Supporting documentation, hangtags and labels depend on the material and order eligibility. Where applicable, CORDURA® supplier or fabric information can also be checked through official brand resources.

Authorization supports material authenticity, while applicable testing supports performance claims. Review the documentation relevant to the actual fabric being ordered.

To begin development, share:

  • Your tech pack, sketches or reference samples

  • Intended use and required functions

  • Preferred fabric weight, hand feel and colors

  • Target quantities and size range

  • Labels, decoration and packaging requirements

  • Target delivery date

April Su supports custom performance apparel development through material sourcing, pattern development, sampling, production coordination and quality control. Garments are developed around your own design brief, with material and production details confirmed before bulk orders proceed.
